From Temples to Stages — The Timeless Journey of Kathak

Kathak, one of the eight major Indian classical dance forms, is more than an art—it’s a living tradition. Originating in the temples of North India, Kathak began as a sacred storytelling practice, where movement, rhythm, and emotion brought mythology to life.

The Roots: Storytelling in Sacred Spaces

The word Kathak is derived from the Sanskrit word Katha, meaning “story.” In its earliest form, Kathak was performed by temple priests known as Kathakars. They used expressive gestures, rhythmic footwork, and facial expressions to narrate stories from epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

This was not simply entertainment—it was devotion in motion, a spiritual offering that connected performer and audience to something divine.

A Royal Evolution: Kathak in Mughal Courts

During the medieval period, Kathak transitioned from temple floors to palace halls. Under Mughal patronage, it was refined and stylized to suit the courtly aesthetic. The emphasis shifted to intricate tatkar (footwork), graceful chakkars (spins), and elegant expression (abhinaya).

This era gave rise to distinct Gharanas or schools of Kathak:

  • Lucknow Gharana – Known for expressive storytelling and subtle grace
  • Jaipur Gharana – Focused on footwork, strong rhythm, and tempo
  • Benaras Gharana – A harmonious blend of rhythm and expression, taught at SSD

Kathak Today: A Global Classical Art

In the modern era, Kathak has found stages across the globe while retaining its classical core. From India to the U.S., it continues to be a powerful form of expression that connects the past with the present.

At Storytellers School of Dance, under the guidance of Ekta Popat, students are trained in the Benaras Gharana style, emphasizing authenticity, technique, and joy.

“Every movement in Kathak is intentional. Every gesture tells a story. And every story connects us—to ourselves, to our culture, and to each other.” – Ekta Popat
