What is Kathak?

Kathak: The Dance of Storytelling

Kathak, one of India’s eight classical dance forms, is first and foremost a dance of storytelling—its name rooted in the Sanskrit word katha (story), and Kathakar—the storyteller. Ancient bards, the Kathakars, performed scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas with expressive gestures, rhythm, and music in temple courtyards.

Where It All Began

Origins & Spiritual Roots

Kathak began as devotional offerings—performances offered in worship, narrated by temple priests who translated epic tales into rhythmic movement and emotion. These narratives were not merely choreographed; they arose from devotion, spiritual tradition, and community transmission of values.

Timeline

Evolution Through Time

Bhakti Period (circa 15th century)

Kathak flourished amid the Bhakti movement, especially focused on Krishna’s legends—his divine love with Radha and the gopis. In Banaras, Kathak took spiritual form, weaving myth, music, and movement together.

Mughal Era (16th–19th centuries)

Under royal patronage, Kathak transitioned from temple grounds to palace halls. Persian influences enriched its music, costumes, and choreography, creating a graceful synthesis of Hindu and Muslim traditions—a hallmark that makes Kathak unique among all Indian classical dances.

Distinct styles emerged—Gharanas—each rooted in specific regions and aesthetics
