Storytellers School of Dance (SSD), led by Ekta Popat offers Kathak classes in the Houston area (Sugar Land, Richmond, Katy, Bellaire, Clear Lake) for adults and children ages 5 & up. Ekta Popat is a disciple of Guru Smt. Shambhavi Dandekar and is trained in the Benaras Gharana of Kathak. Ekta has over 25 years of experience teaching dance. She hopes to give her students the same authentic training that she is fortunate to receive from her guru. Through discipline, focus, and fun Ekta hopes to share her passion and love for Kathak with all of her students.
Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, School of Performing Arts conducts courses at Graduate and Post Graduate level. It runs B.A. Music / B.A. Dance and M.A. Music / M.A. Dance, Ph.D. in Music / Dance courses. These Certificate – Diploma Courses are approved by Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Govt. of Maharashtra. Storytellers School of Dance is the Texas exam center for Bharati Vidyapeeth University.
SSD is the only school that offers a fully accredited Kathak program in Houston. Students of SSD are trained according to the syllabus determined by Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University in Pune, India. Students are evaluated periodically and encouraged to take examinations annually. Students will earn a Bachelor's/Masters degree from this internationally recognized institution.
